Floyd Mayweather Jr. is stepping back into the ring — this time, the courtroom. The undefeated boxing legend filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit Wednesday against Business Insider, its parent company Insider Inc., and journalist Daniel Geiger, accusing them of knowingly publishing false claims about his real estate dealings in a story he says was laced with racial bias and malicious intent.

Filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the suit claims that Business Insider ignored direct documentary evidence, dismissed multiple offers to view verified records, and proceeded to publish a story headlined: "Floyd Mayweather Jr. bragged about a $400 million property deal. There's just one problem."

Mayweather's legal team says there was no problem. In the complaint, they assert that the article misrepresented his business acumen, omitted key facts, and relied on anonymous sources to cast doubt on his ownership claims. The lawsuit also accuses Geiger of an aggressive pattern of harassment — including hundreds of phone calls to Mayweather’s friends, family, and associates, many placed late at night — and alleges he made racially charged comments suggesting the boxer was unqualified to own such properties.

"Floyd Mayweather earned his legacy through discipline and hard work, both in and out of the ring," said attorney Bobby Samini of Samini Block APC. "This lawsuit isn't just about setting the record straight — it's about holding the press accountable when they cross the line from journalism into calculated character assassination."

The complaint seeks $100 million in damages, a public retraction, and injunctive relief, citing defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and prima facie tort. The full complaint can be viewed here.

Hall of Fame tight end and rising media mogul Shannon Sharpe is facing serious legal trouble just days after making headlines for reportedly seeking a nine-figure podcast deal.

A civil lawsuit filed Sunday in Nevada accuses the 56-year-old of sexually assaulting a woman on multiple occasions between late 2024 and early 2025, following what her lawyers describe as a “rocky, abusive relationship.” The woman, identified only as “Jane Doe,” is seeking over $50 million in damages for claims that include sexual battery, assault, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

According to the 13-page complaint, the two first met in 2023 at a Los Angeles gym when the plaintiff was 20. She alleges Sharpe began pursuing her aggressively, ultimately coercing her into a relationship characterized by verbal abuse and controlling behavior. One alleged incident involved Sharpe threatening to kill her after he discovered she was attempting to share her location with friends for safety, while a firearm was visible in the room.

The suit claims the first assault occurred in October 2024, after Doe attempted to cut off contact following a livestreaming incident in which Sharpe allegedly broadcast himself having sex — though the woman in the video was not the plaintiff. The complaint says Sharpe showed up uninvited at her apartment and raped her while she was “crying and sobbing.”

A second alleged incident occurred in January 2025, when Sharpe visited her under the pretense of bringing a birthday and Christmas gift but again sexually assaulted her, this time without protection despite her protests.

“Shannon Sharpe… refused to accept the answer no and raped Plaintiff, despite her sobbing and repeated screams of ‘no,’” the lawsuit states.

Attorney Tony Buzbee, known for representing more than 20 women in lawsuits against NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson, is leading the case along with Micah Nash.

“It takes a great deal of courage to stand up against those with power, fame and money,” Buzbee said in a statement. “I look forward to pressing this case in court.”

The lawsuit also accuses Sharpe of secretly filming their sexual encounters and sharing the footage without her knowledge — allegations that appear to reference Sharpe’s September 2024 Instagram Live mishap, which went viral and drew public scrutiny.

Sharpe has not publicly responded to the lawsuit as of press time. He has not been criminally charged.

The civil complaint comes at a pivotal moment in Sharpe’s media career. Just last week, Front Office Sports reported that Sharpe is negotiating a podcasting deal worth over $100 million as his contract with The Volume expires. His “Club Shay Shay” YouTube channel boasts nearly 4 million subscribers, and his January 2024 interview with comedian Katt Williams has amassed over 89 million views. Sharpe also co-hosts “Nightcap” with Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and frequently appears on ESPN’s “First Take.”

George Foreman, the towering two-time heavyweight boxing champion who later became an iconic pitchman for his namesake grills, has died at the age of 76, his family announced Friday.

Foreman's powerful punches first propelled him to Olympic gold in 1968 and a world title in 1973. While he famously lost the crown to Muhammad Ali in the historic "Rumble in the Jungle" in 1974, Foreman staged a remarkable comeback two decades later, regaining the heavyweight championship at age 45 — the oldest ever to do so.

Obamas May Produce Tiger Woods Film Chronicling His Greatest Run in Golf

A film about Tiger Woods’ rise to golf dominance is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, in talks to produce.

According to Deadline, the movie will be directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who helmed the critically acclaimed King Richard, the biopic about Venus and Serena Williams’ father that won Will Smith an Academy Award. The project will adapt Kevin Cook’s book, “Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played,” focusing on Woods’ legendary run of four consecutive major championship wins between 2000 and 2001.

While Woods’ career has been marked by both triumph and controversy, the film will steer clear of his personal scandals and legal troubles, instead spotlighting his early dominance in golf. In 1997, Woods became the first Black golfer to win a major tournament, revolutionizing the sport and inspiring a new generation. Three years later, he achieved what became known as the “Tiger Slam,” winning the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, PGA Championship, and the Masters in succession — an accomplishment unmatched in modern golf.

Cook’s book details Woods’ tactical genius, mental discipline, and unrelenting pursuit of perfection, with insights from his caddies, coaches, and competitors.

Master P Joins UNO as Head of Basketball Operations

Hip-hop mogul, entrepreneur, and former pro basketball player Percy "Master P" Miller has been named President of Basketball Operations for the University of New Orleans men’s basketball team, a move that brings both star power and deep local roots to the Privateers program.

Miller, a New Orleans native, is best known for transforming Southern hip-hop with No Limit Records, but his influence extends far beyond music. A former college and professional basketball player with stints in the CBA, NBA preseason, and summer leagues, he has spent the past two decades coaching and mentoring young athletes.

“This is a tremendously exciting day for the future of New Orleans Privateers basketball,” said head coach Stacy Hollowell. “Coach Miller cares deeply about his city, the University of New Orleans, and Privateers basketball. We will benefit from his basketball knowledge and his relationships with people within the city and the game.”

Miller’s impact in basketball stretches back to his days coaching elite AAU squads, where he helped develop future NBA players like DeMar DeRozan, Brandon Jennings, Lance Stephenson, and Jalen Suggs. Now, he aims to bring that same passion for player development and community leadership to UNO.

“As a kid growing up in New Orleans, I can honestly say that basketball changed and saved my life,” Miller said. “At that time, UNO was one of the best programs in the country. It was all about Privateer Nation, and there was so much excitement on the Lakefront. I’m committed to bringing that winning tradition back.”

Miller’s appointment isn’t just about on-court success — he sees it as a mission to develop young athletes into future leaders.

“This is bigger than the game — it’s about educating and creating future leaders at the same time. I’m here to make sure these young student-athletes have the opportunities, resources, and mentorship to succeed on and off the court. UNO is our culture, our community, our city, our team, and our family. It’s time to bring the love and passion back to New Orleans basketball.”

Miller’s basketball journey began at NORD parks before he attended Booker T. Washington and Warren Easton high schools. He played collegiately at the University of Houston and Merritt College in Oakland, later earning a business degree. His professional experience includes time with the Fort Wayne Fury, San Diego Stingrays, and Las Vegas Rattlers in the CBA, as well as preseason and summer league runs with the Charlotte Hornets, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings.

Despite his success in music and business, coaching and mentorship have remained central to Miller’s purpose. As the founder of the Team Hope Foundation, he has dedicated himself to community outreach, youth programs, and providing resources to underserved families.

Miller, who holds honorary doctorates from Lincoln University and Grambling State University, has received keys to multiple cities, including New Orleans, Memphis, Houston, and Charlotte. His latest role at UNO reinforces his commitment to uplifting his hometown.

The NFL has announced an all-star lineup of New Orleans music legends for the Super Bowl LIX pregame show, set for Feb. 9, 2025, at Caesars Superdome. The event will feature performances from Jon Batiste, Trombone Shorty, Lauren Daigle, and Ledisi, all of whom have deep ties to Louisiana and its rich musical culture.

The Super Bowl, which will air live on FOX, aims to celebrate the iconic music scene of New Orleans. “We're honored to work with this year's pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL in a release announcing the lineup. “The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year's performers will bring the energy, soul, and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage.”

Five-time Grammy winner and Academy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste will perform the national anthem. A New Orleans native, Batiste is known for his work as a singer, songwriter, and composer, and recently released "Beethoven Blues (Batiste Piano Series, Vol. 1)," which debuted as the No. 1 classical album. He also composed the score for the critically acclaimed film "Saturday Night" by director Jason Reitman.

Trombone Shorty, born Troy Andrews, will join Grammy Award-winning artist Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." Trombone Shorty, known for blending funk, soul, R&B, and rock, is a New Orleans legend who began performing at Jazz Fest at age four and has shared stages with acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters. Daigle, a Louisiana native, is celebrated for her powerful vocals and her 2018 album "Look Up Child," which made her the first female artist to reach the Top 10 on both the pop and Christian album charts simultaneously.

Ledisi, another Grammy Award-winning artist from New Orleans, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Known for her powerful voice and commanding stage presence, Ledisi has earned international acclaim with 15 Grammy nominations and a win for Best Traditional R&B Performance. She has also performed at prestigious venues such as the White House, the Kennedy Center, and Carnegie Hall.

In addition to the musical lineup, the pregame show and the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show will feature American Sign Language (ASL) performances. Stephanie Nogueras will sign the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful," Otis Jones IV will interpret "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and Matt Maxey will deliver an ASL rendition of the halftime show. The ASL performances will be supported by Alexis Kashar of LOVE SIGN and Howard Rosenblum of Deaf Equality.

The NFL also previously announced that Kendrick Lamar will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, with DPS, Roc Nation, and Jesse Collins serving as executive producers.

Joining Wayne on Jan. 18 is Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla, the rising star behind viral hits ‘F.N.F. (Let’s Go)’ and ‘Tomorrow 2.’

The following night, Jan. 19, features a pop-centric lineup headlined by Camila Cabello, known for global hits like ‘Havana’ and ‘Señorita.’ Cabello will be joined by Myles Smith, a British singer-songwriter recognized as Apple Music’s Up Next Artist, and Knox, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who has gained a strong online following.

The weekend culminates on Jan. 20 with the Allstate Championship Tailgate at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. John Amos, Emmy-Nominated Actor of 'Roots' and 'Good Times' Fame, Dies at 84

 John Amos, the acclaimed actor best known for his roles as the stern but loving father on the 1970s sitcom "Good Times" and as the adult Kunta Kinte in the landmark miniseries "Roots," has died. He was 84.

Amos died of natural causes Saturday in Los Angeles, his publicist Belinda Foster said.

His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, released a statement via email: “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold…and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV dad. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

Despite tryouts with the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos, his brief professional football career was unsuccessful.

Amos found his calling in acting, beginning with roles on 1970s shows like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," where he played weatherman Gordy Howard, and "Sanford and Son." However, his stardom soared with his role as James Evans Sr. on "Good Times." The CBS sitcom, which aired from 1974 to 1979, became a cultural touchstone, portraying one of television's first Black two-parent families.

In a 2020 interview, he revealed his disagreements with the white writers: “I felt like I knew more about what a Black family should be and how a Black father would act than our writers…Their idea of what a Black family should be was totally different from mine, and mine was steeped in reality.”  After three seasons, Amos was written off the show; his character was killed in a car accident.

In 1977, Amos made history again with his role as Kunta Kinte in the Emmy-nominated miniseries "Roots." Based on Alex Haley's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the series was a ratings phenomenon and earned Amos critical acclaim. “I knew that it was a life-changing role for me, as an actor and just from a humanistic standpoint,” Amos said in a 2021 interview with Time magazine. “It was like a reward for having suffered those indignities.”

Over the years, Amos continued to leave his mark with roles in films such as "Coming to America" and its 2021 sequel, "Die Hard 2" and "Uncut Gems." He also made notable appearances on TV shows like "The West Wing," "Hunter," "Men in Trees" and "The Ranch."

Amos was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2020.

Lil Wayne Thanks Fans Amidst Super Bowl Heartbreak

New Orleans native Lil Wayne has revealed his heartbreak after not being selected to headline the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show, set to take place in his hometown at Caesars Superdome on Feb. 9.

"It broke me," he said in an emotional Instagram post. "That hurt. It hurt a lot. I thought there was nothing better than that spot, on that stage, in my city."

The NFL announced Kendrick Lamar as the headliner for Super Bowl LIX, leaving Wayne — who had hoped to represent his hometown — devastated.

In his message, Wayne expressed gratitude for the support he's received from fans and peers.

"First of all, I want to say forgive me for the delay," Wayne said. "I had to get the strength to do this without breaking. I want to thank every voice, every opinion, and all the care and love out there. Your words turned into arms that held me up when I tried to fall back.”

Wayne also acknowledged that he had mentally prepared himself to take the stage, leading to a greater sense of disappointment.

Despite his heartbreak, Wayne shared how the outpouring of support has helped him cope.

Lil Wayne's Super Bowl snub has drawn vocal reactions from fans and his industry peers, including Nicki Minaj, Birdman and Boosie Badazz. Many have criticized the NFL's decision to overlook the Young Money founder, especially given his deep ties to New Orleans.

Nicki Minaj, in particular, vented her frustration on social media, directing her ire at JAY-Z, who has played a key role in organizing the halftime show since 2020 through his partnership with the NFL.

The controversy even prompted commentary from Cam’ron, who suggested Wayne’s past tensions with JAY-Z might be a factor.

“This is payback,” Cam’ron said on his sports talk show It Is What It Is. “Lil Wayne not performing in New Orleans for the Super Bowl is egregious.”

As of yet, neither Kendrick Lamar nor JAY-Z have addressed the backlash, though Lamar recently released a track that some believe alludes to the industry's drama surrounding the halftime show.

Kendrick Lamar is set to bring his lyrical fire to the world’s biggest stage. The NFL announced Sunday that the multi-platinum, Grammy- and Pulitzer Prize-winning artist will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show on Feb. 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” Lamar declared in the official announcement. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”

Lamar’s announcement wasn’t just about music—it carried a subtle jab at longtime rival Drake. In a promo video released on social media, Lamar is seen running a football practice, tossing passes to an unseen receiver. After a few successful throws, Lamar turns to the camera with a message: “My name’s Kendrick Lamar, and I’ll be performing at Super Bowl LIX. Will you be pulling up? I hope so! You know it’s only one opportunity to win a championship; no round twos. I wouldn’t want you to miss it.”

The line about “no round twos” appears to be a dig at Drake, who recently posted a clip of NBA star Rasheed Wallace guaranteeing a win after a Game 1 loss in the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals—a nod to Lamar’s suggestion that he’s already secured the championship spot in their ongoing rivalry.

This Super Bowl Halftime Show isn’t Lamar’s first major performance, but it’s certainly his biggest yet. Since bursting onto the scene with his debut album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” in 2012, Lamar has become one of the most influential artists in hip-hop, amassing 17 Grammy Awards and making history as the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win a Pulitzer Prize for his 2017 album “DAMN.” His most recent track, “Not Like Us,” is already the biggest rap song of 2024, expected to sweep the upcoming Grammy Awards.

Roc Nation, Apple Music and the NFL are teaming up to produce the Halftime Show, with executive producer duties shared by the Emmy-winning Jesse Collins. Creative direction for Lamar’s performance will be handled by his own imprint, pgLang.

“Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer,” said Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter, whose Roc Nation has produced the Super Bowl Halftime Show since 2020. “His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision. This isn’t the first time the Super Bowl Halftime Show has featured a hip-hop heavyweight. Lamar himself shared the stage with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige during the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, which won three Creative Arts Emmys. Last year, Usher’s Halftime Show became the most-watched performance in the event’s history, proving that hip-hop’s dominance at the Super Bowl is here to stay.

She's also set to host the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 11, where this track and its music video will be featured prominently.

NFL stars including Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley scramble for her approval — and a sip of that ice-cold Pepsi — as the battle for game-day supremacy begins.

Jake Scott, no stranger to creating visual spectacles, said, "Bringing the epic world of 'Gladiator II' to life in a modern, dynamic way through this Pepsi campaign was incredibly exciting. New Orleans Mayor Cantrell announced Master P as New Orleans' new Entertainment Ambassador, a role designed to elevate the city's cultural and economic profile ahead of Super Bowl LIX.

In a strategic move to elevate the city's cultural scene ahead of Super Bowl LIX, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has appointed Percy "Master P" Miller as the city's first Entertainment Ambassador.

"This partnership is a game-changer," Cantrell announced in a Facebook post Friday, highlighting the hip-hop mogul's proven ability to attract major events and opportunities. "We're aiming to elevate our community and boost our economy through the power of entertainment."

Miller, a New Orleans native who grew up in the Calliope Projects, attended local schools before his entrepreneurial spirit led him to California. There, he founded No Limit Records in the mid-1990s, a label that not only launched his own successful music career but also propelled Southern rap into the mainstream with artists like Snoop Dogg and Mystikal.

His business ventures extend beyond music to include film, television, sports, clothing, and real estate.

During a press conference, Cantrell emphasized Master P's influence across multiple industries, noting how his work embodies the resilience of New Orleans. "This will be a collaborative of New Orleans entertainment advisors for film, television, and music," she said. "This initiative will establish a Hollywood South Collaborative and masterclass environment to teach entertainment business skills."

Miller will kick off his ambassadorship by appearing on the NOLA Insight Podcast next month to discuss the city's entertainment future.

Master P expressed his enthusiasm for the role, emphasizing his commitment to showcasing the city's rich cultural heritage and ensuring that local residents benefit from major events.

"I want more for the city of New Orleans," he said. "As we have all these major events come in, we should be a part of this. People should be on the ground making this happen to keep the city going. So this is only the beginning...it's truly no limit."

Carl Weathers Honored Posthumously with Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

Carl Weathers, the actor, former NFL linebacker and singer best known for his roles as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” films and Dillon in “Predator,” was honored posthumously with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today.

Weathers, who passed away on Feb. 2 at the age of 76 from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, became the second recipient of the Sports Entertainment Walk of Fame star, following Michael Strahan’s recognition in 2023.

The ceremony, sponsored by the Las Vegas Raiders, took place on Hollywood Boulevard with entertainment correspondent Sibley Scoles serving as emcee. The event drew an audience that included Raiders alumni Grant Irons, Jim Plunkett, and Phil Villapiano, reflecting Weathers’ connections to both Hollywood and professional sports.

Speakers included Raiders owner Mark Davis, actor LeVar Burton, and Bryce Dallas Howard. Howard, who directed several episodes of “The Mandalorian,” in which Weathers both starred and directed, praised Weathers for his leadership on set.

"He was a feat of expertise and human excellence," Howard said. "Everybody learned from him because he was a natural leader. Wherever he went, people would light up and stand tall."

Weathers’ career spanned four decades, beginning on the football field as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders and later in the Canadian Football League. After earning a drama degree, he transitioned to acting and made his mark as Apollo Creed in 1976’s “Rocky,” a role that would define his career. He continued to land action roles throughout the 1980s, starring alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Predator” and leading the action-packed “Action Jackson.”

Though known for his tough-guy roles, Weathers also displayed a gift for comedy. He appeared as Chubbs Peterson in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore” (1996) and played a self-parodying version of himself in the cult series “Arrested Development.” More recently, he brought gravitas to his role as Greef Karga in “The Mandalorian,” earning an Emmy nomination for his work.

Beyond his on-screen achievements, Weathers explored his passion for music, releasing the single “That’s Love Calling” in 1981. The song, showcasing his vocal talents, added another layer to his diverse artistic pursuits.

Burton, a longtime friend, remembered Weathers as a man of authenticity and compassion. “Carl was a humanitarian, and I think the best tribute I can pay to him is that he was, in fact, the embodiment of a good man,” Burton said. “In Carl’s presence, you knew he was focused 100 percent on you.”

Reflecting on their time spent at a Los Angeles spa, Burton shared how Weathers embraced every moment with honesty. “Carl had no problem being his authentic self in every single moment,” Burton said. “I think his ability to be authentic was probably his greatest gift, and greatest talent.”

Ana Martinez, producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies, highlighted the significance of Weathers’ contributions to both entertainment and sports. “Carl left an indelible mark on the worlds of sports and entertainment, and it is our honor to immortalize his legacy on our iconic sidewalk,” she said, adding that Weathers had been actively involved in preparing to receive the star before his passing.

From Negro Leagues to Cooperstown: Willie Mays' Extraordinary Journey Ends at 93

Willie Mays, the iconic Hall of Fame center fielder known as the greatest all-around baseball player of all time, died Tuesday, the San Francisco Giants announced. He was 93.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93,” the Giants announced on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Mays, nicknamed “The Say Hey Kid,” had a professional baseball career that spanned four decades, beginning with the Negro Leagues in the late 1940s and ending with the New York Mets in 1973. He spent 21 years with the New York Giants, who would later move to San Francisco.

Born on May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama, Mays was introduced to baseball by his father, Cat Mays, a semi-pro player on several local Black teams. By high school, Mays excelled in several sports and began his professional baseball career in 1948 with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues.

Mays signed with the Giants in 1950 after graduating high school and was called up to the majors in May 1951 after barely a year in the minors. He debuted on May 25, 1951, and hit his first home run against the Boston Braves in his fourth game. He won Rookie of the Year that season, the first of many accolades.

Mays was a true five-tool player, excelling in speed, throwing, fielding, hitting for average, and hitting for power. He had a career triple-slash line of .301/.384/.557, with 660 home runs, 525 doubles, and 338 stolen bases. He led the National League in stolen bases and home runs four times each. Over 24 seasons, he grounded into just 45 double plays.

In May 2021, 10 hits were added to Mays’ career total when Negro League stats were officially integrated into MLB’s historical record. His home run total was not adjusted due to the lack of box scores from those games.

Mays missed most of 1952 and all of 1953 due to military service during the Korean War but returned in 1954 to have the greatest season of his career, hitting .345/.411/.667 with 41 home runs. He won MVP and was selected to the All-Star Game. Mays finished in the top six of MVP voting from 1955 to 1966, winning MVP again in 1965 and coming in second twice. He was selected to the All-Star Game 20 times, winning All-Star MVP in 1963 and 1968, and also won 12 Gold Gloves.

Mays’ most iconic play came in the 1954 World Series, known simply as “The Catch.” In Game 1, he made a stunning over-the-shoulder catch off Vic Wertz's drive and prevented any runners from scoring with a quick throw to second base.

Mays began a slow decline in the late 1960s, though he still posted a National League-best .425 OBP in 1971. The Giants traded him to the Mets in May 1972, and he played his final season in 1973.

After retiring, Mays became the Mets hitting coach until 1979, when he terminated his baseball contract to become a greeter at an Atlantic City hotel and casino. Then-commissioner Bowie Kuhn banned Mays from baseball due to the gambling connection, but he was reinstated in 1985 by Peter Ueberroth, Kuhn’s successor.

The Giants, who retired Mays’ number in 1972, signed him to a lifetime contract in the 1990s, making him a permanent special assistant to the president. He spent years visiting the Giants’ minor-league teams, attending spring training, and making appearances on behalf of the club.

Mays is survived by his son, Michael. His wife, Mae Louise Allen Mays, died in 2013 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mays was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Though he wasn’t a unanimous choice, he received 94.68% of the vote.

In 2015, Mays received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Barack Obama.

The six-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, who played 20 seasons in New England, was visibly moved by the tribute.
